For the Love of Cooper

September 24, 2011

The week has been long and I have been short on time to write. So, instead of struggling to produce a post that isn’t what I want, I thought I’d post a few pictures of Cooper, my sweet and silly and often-maddening little dog.

Cooper is a mix of a mini Australian shepherd and a mini poodle — an “Aussiepoo” as some call it. I got him from a very young couple who got him from the owner of his parents. He was 7 weeks old, weighed just over 2 pounds and had a bad case of diarrhea. The couple was clearly overwhelmed. As soon as I brought him into my life, we started on a wild journey that I wasn’t sure either of us would survive. In fact, I have often said that the only reason Cooper is alive today is because the two of us had an amazing trainer who would often tell me that his antics were … well … at least sort of normal.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. One of these days, I will tell the story of Cooper more completely. For now, I just wanted to share a few pictures of his first encounter with the ocean — as well as the aftermath. Cooper likes to think of himself as large and in-charge. In reality, the feel of grass brushing along his back has sent him spinning around and barking at the enemy that was clearly out to get him. So, I knew that seeing those waves coming after him would be important for him to experience. And, of course, entertaining for me.

Cooper in the backseat of the car. He's trying to let me know that he's not really too enthused with this whole "going for a ride" thing.

Just taking in the sights and sounds and smells.

After a day of hiking and exploring and “fighting” the killer waves of the ocean (by barking and growling at them and then running away, of course), Cooper was too tired to do much besides eat and then decide that he wanted to sleep on me. Yes, the picture isn’t as good as those above. It was taken with my iPhone, which was the only thing I could reach with him snoozing on top of me.

Cooper sleeping on me. I had never seen him this exhausted.
