Pretty Pansies

April 10, 2012

Or are they violas? Honestly, I can’t really tell the difference. From what I’ve read, violas are ancestors of pansies, but that still doesn’t help me in telling which is which at first glance. Another description tells me that pansies grow “from the ground on one main stem and branch above the ground. Flowers are larger and more round than viola. Viola branches below ground with many plants sharing the same root system.”

Yeah … my fallback is still checking the little plastic tag when I buy them at the local garden center.

I bought several of the compact little plants to sink in the still-soggy Oregon soil because I found that they wintered over well and put on new beautiful flowers as soon as they were touched by the first rays of the spring sun. I’m also drawn to the subtle color variations and delicate details of every blossom.
