My Newest Rose

May 29, 2013

Last year, I promised myself that I wasn’t going to buy another rose bush.

I didn’t have room, I reasoned. All the best sun-side spots of my house were already taken.

Then, I ran into a little beauty — the Black Baccara.

Apparently, the rose was developed with florists in mind. The hybrid tea rose is large and will last up to two weeks when cut. The burgundy red rose can appear almost black and the petals are almost velvety.

Soooo … despite my resolution, I bought the shrub and planted it in front of my house.

Over the past week, the first bloom finally started to emerge, despite the bad weather we’ve had.

While the closed buds are blacker than black, the open rose is not as dark as I originally expected. It doesn’t matter, though. I love it anyway.

Me too! I’ll bet it smells lovely!

    • You know, funny enough, it doesn’t really smell like much. In developing it for long-life, they seemed to breed out the beautiful scent.

Ah, that’s too bad. Something so beautiful should be intoxicating.
